What is a 5K Buddy?

What is a 5K Buddy for Girls on the Run Union County?

At Girls on the Run Union County, we celebrate the incredible journey our participants take each season, culminating in an inspiring 5K event. But they don’t complete this race alone—they have a special support system by their side: their 5K Buddy!

A 5K Buddy is a positive, encouraging role model who runs (or walks) alongside a Girls on the Run or Heart & Sole participant during the season-ending 5K. This person provides motivation, reassurance, and companionship, ensuring that each girl feels supported every step of the way.

Who Can Be a 5K Buddy?

A 5K Buddy can be a parent, 15 years old+ family member, teacher, coach, or family friendapproved by the participants caregiver and wants to cheer on their girl throughout the 5K. What matters most is a positive attitude and the willingness to encourage and celebrate the girl’s achievement.

What Does a 5K Buddy Do?

  • Encourages and supports their participant from start to finish, helping her find her happy pace and stay motivated.

  • Maintains a positive attitude and reminds her that the 5K is about personal accomplishment, not speed.

  • Ensures safety and well-being throughout the event.

  • Celebrates success at the finish line—whether that’s with a high five, a big hug, or some well-earned cheering!

Why Are 5K Buddies Important?

The 5K is not so much a race—it’s a powerful experience that boosts confidence, resilience, and a sense of achievement. Having a dedicated 5K Buddy makes the journey even more meaningful, reinforcing the lessons of determination and self-belief that Girls on the Run Union County promotes throughout the season.
